Day 6--June 26--John Day OR to Baker City OR
Miles Ridden: 80.8
Avg Speed: 14.3 mph
Climbing: 4,699 ft
Today's ride consisted of three very difficult climbs and three very fast descents in country that was wooded and cool at high altitudes but increasingly hot and dry as we continued east.
One positive about the village of John Day was that it had a very good restaurant that made up for the miserable motel. Our eating habits are certainly abnormal by this point as we try to offset the 4-5 thousand calories we burn cycling each day.
My consumption today went like this;
Breakfast (6:00 AM)
Bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar and raisins
Scrambled eggs
10 sausages
hash browns
toast
bowl of fruit
9:00 Am Stop
Blackberry cobbler with ice cream
Energy bar
Lunch
Two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
one sleeve of fig newtons
corn chips for salt
two energy bars
3:00 PM arrival in Baker City
Milkshake
Dinner
Large Salad
Fettuccine Alfredo
2 baked potatoes
mixed vegetables
2 chicken breasts
dinner rolls
strawberry shortcake
During the Day
2 gallons of water
1 and 1/2 half gallons of Gatorade
Six days into the trip, I'm getting used to the mountains. A climb that seemed like the toughest thing I had ever done on Wednesday is now just difficult...and we had three of them today.
Baker City was the first town in four days with normal amenities. It is located along I-84. It is hard to tell what the people do as there appeared to be no major commercial activities but it had a very attractive main street and some interesting old buildings.
We were told that part of the ride tomorrow to Ontario would be on the Interstate as there are no alternate routes. We are all apprehensive as I can't imagine surviving on a bicycle on a Michigan Interstate.
At the top of a pass outside John Day there was a memorial to the Oregon Trail which passed through at this point. Our route for the next two days generally followed the Oregon Trail.

One of the three major descents. Trees replaced scrub above 4000 feet.
We had lunch at a beautiful spot along a small lake. It looked better than the picture.

Yummy meals. What about a half gallon of OJ? Calories, sugar....good for you too.
ReplyDeleteI think I had some for breakfast but forgot to write it down. OJ while riding would have a terrible effect on my digestive system.
ReplyDelete10 sausages?
ReplyDeleteDave -- This sounds like your "normal" Derby weekend intake, only substituting the 2 gal water & 1.5 gal Gatorade for Evin's tea?!?! The blog, pics and narative are fantastic...great to be able to keep up with your progress. I'm sure it will make a fantastic keepsake and reminder of each day for you. Ride fast & take chances!
