Day 23--Rapid City SD to Wall SD--July 13th

Miles Ridden 57.5
Avg Speed 17.6 MPH
Climbing 1788 Ft.
Total Miles Ridden 1646
Miles To Go 1983

Today's ride was short, only 57 miles. We have a very long ride tomorrow. The length of these rides in sparsely populated areas is determined by the availability of lodging and food, not by the riders' preference.

The terrain out of Rapid City was rolling hills and we raced for about 40 miles through hay fields before finishing up before noon with a stretch on the interstate. For the first time on the trip, the heat really became an issue near the end of the ride as the temperature rose to the high 80's. More of that is forecast for tomorrow.

If you have driven within 400 miles of Wall SD, you have seen the billboards for Wall Drug. We saw our first in western Wyoming. It's a series of buildings made up of a small drug store and a large number of souvenir shops and appears to be the sole reason there is anything in Wall. Since there is virtually nothing else to see and we finished early, we all went to Wall Drug. It actually wasn't as bad as it sounds.

Tomorrow we ride 117 miles to Pierre (pronounced peer), the capital of South Dakota. Pierre is actually 20 miles out of our way to the north but is the closest town with facilities. We are supposed to get on the road before 6:00 AM to avoid as much of the heat as possible and to allow the slower riders to finish at a reasonable time.

Picture another rider took of yesterday's hail storm. Glad I missed it.

The only business on the road between Rapid City and Wall. They don't mean bicycles.
