Day 39--Birch Run MI to Port Huron MI--July 29th
Total Miles 87.4
Avg. Speed 18.1 MPH
Climbing 800 Ft.
Total Miles Ridden 2846
Miles To Go 783
The scenery in our three day sprint across Michigan might not have been the greatest but the weather today certainly was. The heat and humidity lifted and we had a clear, cool day with light winds for the 87 mile ride through the farms of the Thumb to Lake Huron and the Blue Water Bridge. The terrain was flat with only two small hills. I did learn that Yale, Michigan considers itself the bologna capital of the world. I have no idea where that claim comes from other than that they have a bologna museum and festival.
The traffic got much heavier when we hit the lakeshore drive for the last fifteen miles to Port Huron so we had to be careful not to spend too much time looking at the water. The drivers are noticeably more aggressive and less courteous with bicyclists than they are further west. Maybe things will improve when we get to Canada tomorrow. The day gets off to an exciting start when we cross the Blue Water Bridge to Canada. The eastbound lanes will be closed for us as we ride over in a group with a police escort.

The Blue Water Bridge to Sarnia, Ontario which will be shut down for our crossing tomorrow
A freighter coming up the St. Clair River to Lake Huron. The water really was a tropical shade of blue as it flowed in from the lake
The bridge and the boat. I've been across the bridge many times but never seen it from below
